Character Background
• History: A very brief history of her character is here; a slightly longer one is detailed below:
Anna grew up outside of the city to German immigrants who encouraged her to study hard and go to college in their footsteps. Her father pushed her into the field of history with a focus on military conflicts, and she made it a handful of semesters into her free ride before things went bad. She met Rose Geteilt, her first love and the woman she wanted to change her life for; she convinced Anna to follow her own path instead of the footsteps of others.
When she told her parents she was both dropping out of college and gay, they disowned her. She holds out hope that they treated her little sister Beth better, but she's not sure and hasn't exactly devoted the last decade to finding out. She's lived in the city of Recolle since then, doing odd jobs and tech support to get by, and that would've been the end of it if it weren't for the Retrospec app. In brief, she found her purposeless existence drawn into a new layer of reality, one where souls intermingled and hers merged with that of YoRHa Type-A No.2, a battle android from millennia in the future.
Her body began merging with that soul, too, first taking her human legs, then her heart, then her arms and chest and replacing it all with mechanical parts. She has no idea how any of this actually interfaces with her still-human head, but she's figured that as long as it all still works, she doesn't need to think too hard about it. (This is a surprise tool to hurt her later.) Still, as she learned more about A2 and began taking more ownership of her place in the world, she realized that she was here to protect the city who raised her and the people in it. She'd found a purpose at last.
That sense of purpose brought her to an expedition to a dangerous sublayer of reality at the behest of Retrospec HR employee Zee Carlisle. There, she discovered some more secrets behind how souls intermingle when her mind was flooded with memories that were neither hers nor A2's. In the confusion, she fought against an enormous brain creature intent on stealing back her soul; though she won, the brain took her left eye in the process. It's resistant to magical restoration, and she doesn't want it restored anyway.
When last we saw Anna, she'd just finished traveling into the future to pull a more complete version of herself back in time to save the city once and for all. She's seen how things are supposed to play out for her; she's spoken with her future self. That's driven her forward since the conclusion of Recollé as a game; since she's seen her own future, things have to turn out okay. Right?
• Core Relationships:
- Rose Geteilt, the woman Anna first fell in love with. Still not over her. It's been eleven years. Come on, girl. She's just not that into you.
- Zee Carlisle, former employer at Retrospec and therapist (but not hers). Responsible for almost all her knowledge about layered reality; indirectly responsible for losing her eye. She doesn't blame him.
- Clarence Vanderweele, eugenicist and antagonist of Recollé. His experiments are responsible for nearly everything that's made her life harder to deal with, but she knows how to deal with people like him.
- Peter and Renate Lehmann, her parents who disowned her in July of 2010. Kind people on the outside, but rotten below the skin (in Anna's opinion). She hasn't spoken to them in years and isn't interested in going back.
- Elizabeth Lehmann, her little sister. Probably a librarian by now, but they haven't had any communication since she left home. Anna has no idea whether her parents were kind to her or not. The guilt eats at her.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
Positive Experiences:
- On September 26th, 2009, in the city of Recollé, Anna met Rose Geteilt in a small bar that neither of them was old enough to be in. From here quickly blossomed a relationship that Anna didn't realize was a relationship for the first couple dates. Rose helped her find herself in a brand new city and opened up part of her that she hadn't even known was there. It might have led to a terrible time in her life, but she still credits Rose with helping her discover herself. Memories of the good times kept her warm at night, and for the brief time they were together, Anna really was happy. Rose would turn out to be one of the driving forces in Anna's steadfast protection of the city, even (especially) when she fell off the app and became just a normal person again.
- On March 3rd, 2018, a close friend used a power ring to temporarily give Anna the power of flight. This happened about a month after being introduced to the Retrospec app, and this moment changed Anna's entire perspective on the world she lived in now. To put it in her own words: "You ever seen the waffle house from 40 feet in the air? I started crying. This whole thing is the only thing that's given me hope that maybe life isn't so fucking shitty and I'm not going to be stuck in the same cycle of dead-end jobs for years and maybe eventually I'll stop thinking my parents were right."
- Her relationship with A2, the person she's turning into, is complicated. Though she initially felt terrified of turning into her out of a misunderstanding that A2 was just a murderous android, eventually she learned more. A2 was a commander, a leader of a platoon and responsible for the safety of everyone under her command. She learned that A2 is the sole survivor of a series of tragedies that took out her entire platoon, and the way she interacted with the memories of a person she'd never meet changed forever. She devoted herself to making sure that nobody close to her would die if she had anything to say about it. For however much of A2 is conscious inside of Anna, Anna will ensure that A2 never has to live through another event that leaves her with no one.
- On July 19th, 2010, just outside the city of Recollé, Anna told her parents that she was gay. They had a blowout fight, including shouting the words "I'm not your little fucking toy soldier" and "I'll figure this out on my own", then she packed her life into a bag and boarded a bus back into the city. The bitterness and anger festered inside her for years before she could bring herself to embrace the slur that her father had called her and make it her own identity instead. The fire has cooled with time, but it's still smoldering and could spark back up if the coals get poked the wrong way.
- From July 1st to September 1st, 2018, Anna's personality shifted into a much more uptight, repressed, and "respectable" person known as Annalise. She lived a glimpse into an alternate reality where she denied the influence that Retrospec had on her and stayed the course that her parents had set for her. This culminated in a metaphorical battle for her soul where Rose rescued her "true" personality and pulled it out of the alternate reality, but to this day Anna has clear memories of being someone that she isn't. Thinking too hard about it terrifies her, not just because she can see the road not taken, but because she's convinced, in her deepest memories, that Annalise still lives within her somewhere. She runs the risk of waking up like her again, and this time she won't have anyone to pull her out.
- For years, she's worried about feeling directionless and not knowing who she is anymore. Although learning more about A2 has helped her find who she believes herself to be, she's suppressing the idea of losing her own humanity at the same time. In early February 2019, during her sublayer excursion, she found herself plagued with the thought of how many parts of herself she can replace before she's still herself anymore. (It doesn't help that she ended that expedition with memories of three other people dancing around in her head, too.) It speaks to a dread that she has to manage carefully lest it open up in her chest in the middle of the night and keep her awake for days. She doesn't know what's happening to her or if she's even herself anymore, but she's just forcing herself to be okay with that.
- Whether it's from knowing all these amazing people who have done incredible things or just a result of who she is as a person, she keeps all of these things inside of her and doesn't know how to process it. Only one person knows her fear of Annalise and only because it was forcibly yanked from her and presented to both of them. People know that she's still messed up about her eye, but she won't talk about it or let anybody try to talk about it with her. She's been living on her own for so long that she either doesn't want to or doesn't know how to rely on anyone else for help.
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Enhanced strength and durability, mostly due to increased body density from her metallic body.
• Blood Type: Coldblood
• Omen: A ruddy Somali cat named Vier with a missing left eye.
• Blessed Day: July 19th, the day she was kicked out and the course of her life forked forever.
• Patron Pthumerian: The Reckoning. She probably won't feel too strongly about this to begin with.
• Blood Power Manifestation: More along the lines of bolt/fire paper for her katana than any serious conjuration
